THE SHIP HAS SAILED

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy our raft flotilla with us this past weekend! More photos and video from the event to come. And don’t forget our first parade is coming up on September 3rd, starting at the lot on Broad Street between Pine and Spruce streets. See you there!

Stamping Away

We like to make things by hand. We like handmade things. We’d like you to have something made by hand… That’s why we decided to individually stamp each of the 12,000 invitations with our compass/bird logo.

By hand.

In the beautiful ornate meeting room of the Art Alliance a small crew were stampin’ it to win it! Later on they were joined by the youngest Rockaway member Wolf (4), who turned out to be a natural.

The big move from Broad St. to Bartram’s Gardens has begun. We are hoping to move most of the remaining rafts tomorrow. Swing by the dock at Bartram’s and say hi if you can!

PROGRESS AND PUPPET SHOWS

- Building is progressing on the site. We’ll be relocating most of the fleet to Bartram’s Gardens this week.
- It’s still pretty hot, but a little ingenuity and some art supplies can considerably improve one’s sleeping situation.
- We had a little potluck/talent show get together with the Mural Arts crew. It ended predictably: rolling and unrolling groups of us in a giant foam mat.

Birdseye Build Site

As we prepare to move from the Broad St. build site to Bartram’s Gardens, we thought it would be fun to take a look at it from the Kimmel Center across the street.

And Nobody Brought Doughnuts…

In the earliest and most attended build site day to date, all of the crew currently in Philly arrived at the lot looking sharper than a sawzall blade. The occasion was to be immortalized by ancient technologies in the flattering morning rays. Crew member Robyn Hasty made a beautiful large-format wet plate group portrait. You can see more of her work here.

Our First Craft Night!

Tiny Flags Craft Night

Have you ever seen nautical signaling flags?  There’s an entire graphic alphabet that ships can wave at each other to talk about whatever they have on their minds. Taking that as our jumping-off point, we’ll be painting fabric flags to hang all over our boats and wave all over town.  Funny flags!  Sad flags!  Serious flags!  Flags of celebration and scheming, and flags to bring the thunder!  What to bring? Fabric scraps, old clothes, sheets, paints, markers, glue, glitter, buttons, whatever materials float your boat, and maybe your own scissors just in case of a crowd… and we’ll have plenty of those materials, beverages, snacks, ideas, wild theories!  Can’t wait to see you!

Shadow Party

Saturday night we had another wonderful grill party at our build site. New friends, Old Turkey and shish kebabs made the evening just right. Halfway through the night, two Venetian gondoliers, a legless ballroom-dancing queen and a four-legged Frankenstein figure decided to join us as well!
